The Name Provence, A Roman Heritage
As one of the first Roman conquests outside the Italian peninsula, the Mediterranean coast was attributed the name Provincia in 58 BC, ancestor to its modern version of Provence.
The Flag, Emblem of its Origins
Composed of the coats of arms of the former provinces of Dauphiné, Provence and the County of Nice, the flag of the region PACA intends to be the symbol of the union of these territories, with its red stripes on a yellow background, an eagle and a dolphin.
Occitan Culture, A World Apart
Attached to France during the French Revolution, Provence has always cultivated its difference, in the image of the association Félibrige founded by Frédéric Mistral, which has been promoting the region’s unique identity since 1854.
