OUR BONDI GREEN STORE

As part of our commitment to being cultivators of change, L’Occitane Australia are thrilled to be taking action at a local level with the opening of our “Green Store”, a milestone in our sustainability journey. Having already been powered since 2020 by 100% renewable energy across their 55 Boutiques, warehouse and head office, through the purchase of an Energy Attribute Certificate, L’Occitane Australia have taken their goal of being a Carbon Net Zero company 2030 to the next level with the conversion of their Westfield Bondi Boutique into a fully-fledged Green Store.

Our commitment to the Green Store is a testament of our dedication towards sustainability and cements our position as leaders in the industry for reducing waste and supporting the environment. WHAT IS A GREEN STORE? WHAT IS A GREEN STORE?

WHAT IS A GREEN STORE?

Working with the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), the nation’s most renowned organisation in green building, we have converted our Westfield Bondi Junction Boutique into a fully-functional, 5-star rated and to be certified Green Store. Such a qualification recognises a standard of excellence in sustainable and environmentally conscious design, construction and operation.

Despite the challenges associated with creating a green retail space, particularly that innovation in retail fit out is less evolved and that there are significant time pressures involved which directly impacts consumer trading, we persisted with the process to demonstrate our dedication to reducing waste and promoting sustainable habits for our consumers.

GREEN WALL

A key feature, both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally beneficial is the living green wall with a fully integrated irrigation system that not only creates a harmonious environment, but it is also a natural air-filter. The plants in the green wall help metabolise toxins in the air, while at the same time releasing oxygen into the air but at a much larger scale than regular potted plants.

ICEBREAKER SINK

The large centre island unit is one of the highlights. Called an “Icebreaker” because customers are welcomed to the store by offering a hand spa. And there is something special about the stone used for the unit.

Forging a partnership with Betta Stone, an Australian-based company who are pioneers in producing engineered benchtops from recycled glass, we were able to supply collected glass from our in-store TerraCycle program for the manufacture of the Boutique’s benchtops and icebreaker sink. A first for Betta Stone, this repurposing of waste enabled us to close the loop on the circular economy.

OPTIMAL FUNCTIONALITY & COMFORT

We also designed the new Green Store with optimal functionality and comfort in mind for employees and customers alike. Key measures implemented to do this include:

  • Utilising a sound reduction construction method for the wall between the back and front of the store to ensure acoustic comfort for team members during their break.
  • An ergonomist-approved counter area design to ensure a high level of comfort for team members working behind the counter.
  • Lighting design to offer a well-lit space.

CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENTS

The opening of the Green Store marks the start of a new chapter in our sustainability journey and as part of its ongoing maintenance will be monitored for new ways that resource consumption can be reduced. For instance,

  • There will be a separate water meter in the store to measure and set reduction targets
  • All electricity supply for back of store will run on sensors while LED lights and signage in the front of store will run on timers

As Cultivators of Change… we will continue to challenge ourselves — the way we think and most importantly, the way we act.

A BRAND ACHIEVEMENT

Pierre-Emmanuel Joffre, General Manager L’OCCITANE Australia, said “We are so proud of this achievement and the level of detail; from the materials through to the refill fountain; we collaborated across the whole company to think outside the box so that sustainability & reducing waste is at the centre of the Boutique, just like L’Occitane’s philosophy, it is in everything we do”.
